Journal of Transport and Sustainability (JTaS) addresses the vitally important nexus between transport and sustainability. It covers papers addressing a wide range of issues relating to transport and the mobility of people, goods, information and the sustainability implications. The journal aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)9 – Industry, innovation and infrastructure, SDG11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG13 – Climate action.

JTAS is a gold open access journal. The article processing charge (APC) of £1,250 will be waived for content submitted to this journal before 1 February 2026.

Aims and scope

Globalisation, industrialisation, e-commerce and tourism mean demand for transport is ever-increasing and the effects of this global mass mobility – both positive and negative – affect almost every aspect of contemporary society and manifest themselves in ever-more dramatic ways. Issues of local pollution, Net Zero, congestion, climate change, responsible sourcing and procurement, personal safety, financial efficiency and performance, disruptive technologies, staff wellbeing, place-based solutions for decarbonisation, im/mobility and ageing and behavioural change mean transport’s relationship with the concept of sustainability is both highly complex and of major concern worldwide.

Journal Transport and Sustainability (JTaS) addresses the vitally important nexus between transport and sustainability. It will cover papers addressing a wide range of issues relating to transport and the mobility of people, goods, information and the sustainability implications. It will examine the economic, social, political and environmental aspects of transportation planning, operations and evaluation, and the intersection between transport and other policy sectors, including health, education and international affairs. The journal is purposefully interdisciplinary in scope and will host different disciplinary backgrounds and perspectives. Following rigorous quality assurance, suitable papers will be sent for blind peer review. Each paper must demonstrate a firm appreciation of how its content relates to the broader imperatives associated with transport and sustainability. Papers on the following topics will be particularly welcome:

All the mechanised transport modes, namely road, rail, maritime and aviation;
‘Active’ forms of transport, most notably cycling and walking;
Decarbonisation and Net Zero – policies, technologies and critiques;
New forms of shared and micromobility (including scooters);
Disruptive innovations in passenger and personal transport and freight logistics;
Submissions which consider the first, last and every mile of the journey;
Policy and governance issues regarding transport’s relationship with inter-related public policy areas;
AI and advanced data analytics as they can be applied to transport;
Place-based transport solutions (e.g., multimodal interchanges, travel plans, mobility hubs)
Transport futures, especially in the context of transport’s emerging relationship with ICTs;
‘Mobilities’ concerns associated with sociological, behavioural and spatial aspects of travel and transport;
Disasters and Resilience
Papers which focus on areas of the world which have hitherto been underexplored from a transport and sustainability perspective.
