About Journal:

International Journal of Building Pathology and Adaptation (IJBPA) is a CIB-encouraged journal that publishes findings on contemporary and original research towards sustaining, maintaining and managing existing buildings.
Aims and scope
The International Journal of Building Pathology and Adaptation (IJBPA) provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of buildings, their performance and adaptation in order to develop appropriate technical and management solutions. This requires an holistic understanding of the complex interactions between the materials, components, occupants, design and environment, demanding the application and development of methodologies for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment in this multidisciplinary area. With rapid technological developments, a changing climate and more extreme weather, coupled with developing societal demands, the challenges to the professions responsible are complex and varied; solutions need to be rigorously researched and tested to navigate the dynamic context in which today’s buildings are to be sustained.

The journal aims to publish rigorous research articles, case studies and reviews concerning innovative investigations on topics related to: the technical and pathological issues associated with maintaining and conserving buildings; and the refurbishment and adaptation of existing buildings in response to environmental, technological and societal developments. Particular emphasis is placed on the emerging environmental challenges and application of digital technologies (including BIM) with sustaining and conserving buildings.

The journal encompasses all building types and architectural forms, including historical buildings, the associated infrastructure and technologies, together with the methodologies applied in the context of surveying, adapting, converting, conserving, maintaining and managing these. The scope and coverage of the journal is, by design, appropriately diverse and multi-disciplined, reflecting the emerging technological, environmental and societal challenges of sustaining resilient buildings in all world regions. In this context, we welcome contributions that support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

The journal scope extends to construction management and project management topics, however, it is important that any such articles clearly relate to the fundamental themes of building pathology and adaptation, with for example studies relating to refurbishment, maintenance and/or retrofit projects.

Within this context, the scope and coverage of the journal incorporates the following indicative topics:

Behavioural and human responses
Building defects and prognosis
Building adaptation and retrofit
Building conservation and restoration
Building Information Modelling (BIM)
Building and planning regulations and legislation
